Glossary and references

Plain-language definitions of the techniques named in the catalogue. Links go to the source pages used; the explanations are written for this catalogue and are general. Confirm exact specifications with the dealer quote.

Raman spectroscopy

Measures the small energy shift in laser light scattered by molecular vibrations; each material has a unique shift pattern, so it identifies substances non-destructively.

Fluorescence / absorbance spectroscopy

Absorbance shows what wavelengths a sample takes in; fluorescence shows what it re-emits. Combined they quantify dyes, proteins and dissolved organics.

Fluorescence lifetime (TCSPC)

Time-correlated single-photon counting times how long fluorescence lasts after a pulse of light, revealing the molecule's environment and interactions.

Ellipsometry

Analyses the change in light polarisation on reflection to find thin-film thickness and optical constants.

Atomic force microscopy (AFM)

A nanometre-sharp tip on a flexible cantilever scans a surface; tip motion is converted to a topographic map and mechanical or electrical properties.

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

A focused electron beam scans a sample; emitted electrons build a high-magnification image of surface structure.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR)

Detects changes in refractive index at a metal surface to follow binding and film growth in real time without labels.

Capillary flow porometry

Gas pushes a wetting liquid out of a saturated sample; the pressure needed at each stage gives pore size, and the first bubble point gives the largest pore.

Potentiostat / galvanostat / EIS

A potentiostat holds a set voltage and measures current; a galvanostat holds current and measures voltage; electrochemical impedance spectroscopy adds frequency response. Used for batteries, fuel cells, corrosion and sensors.

Gamma-ray spectroscopy

A detector (often high-purity germanium or sodium iodide) converts each gamma ray to a pulse proportional to its energy; the spectrum identifies and quantifies radioactive isotopes.

Multichannel analyzer (MCA)

Sorts detector pulses by height into channels to build an energy spectrum.

Radiation monitoring and dosimetry

Measuring radiation dose, dose rate and contamination to protect people and check materials.

Thermoluminescent / optically stimulated dosimetry

Dosimeter crystals store radiation energy and release it as light when heated (TLD) or illuminated (OSL); the light is proportional to dose.

Contact angle / surface tension

The angle a liquid drop makes on a solid shows wettability; with several liquids it gives surface energy and adhesion.

Solar simulation and irradiance

Lamps imitate sunlight to test photovoltaics, sunscreens and materials indoors; radiometers measure the light.

Optical table / vibration isolation

A rigid honeycomb table on air or active isolators stops floor and acoustic vibration from disturbing optical alignment.

Sputtering

Ions knock atoms off a target in vacuum so they land on a substrate as a thin film.

Vacuum systems

Pumps, gauges and fittings that create and measure low pressure for coating and analysis.

Electrospinning

A high-voltage field draws a polymer solution into nanofibres collected as a mat.

SQUID magnetometry and PPMS

SQUID magnetometers measure tiny magnetic moments; the PPMS platform measures electrical, thermal and magnetic properties across temperature and field.

Ultrafast (femtosecond) lasers

Lasers emitting pulses of about 10 to 1000 femtoseconds, used for ultrafast spectroscopy, microscopy, machining and metrology.

Laboratory lasers

Continuous or pulsed light sources used to excite, probe or process samples.

Particle image velocimetry (PIV)

Two timed laser flashes light tracer particles in a flow so cameras can compute velocity fields.

Cryocooler / cryogen plants

Mechanical refrigerators and liquefiers that reach cryogenic temperatures without bought-in liquid helium or nitrogen.

Laboratory furnaces

High-temperature heating chambers (muffle, tube, vacuum) for heat treatment, ashing and materials synthesis.

Cuvettes and certified reference materials

Cuvettes hold liquid samples in spectrophotometers; certified references (e.g. potassium dichromate) verify instrument accuracy.

Trust rating of this site

An automated audit re-opened each source link and matched the numbers on the page. It is a string match, not a human read: "not confirmed" means the match failed, not that the value is wrong. Pages that blocked the check are graded C or D. Full detail is in reference/trust.csv and reference/trust_summary.md.

A Confirmed on a manufacturer page that was re-openedB Confirmed by a distributor, government page or two sourcesC Single secondary source or not re-openedD Unverifiable, conflicting, dead link or likely error
